September News Letter - The End of the Operating System Everyone Will Remember
In less than a year on April 8th, 2014, Microsoft will end support for Windows XP forever. This means no more patches, no more security bulletins, and no more phone support. Even though XP is nearly 12 years old, over 37% of all PCs in the world still run Windows XP.

So what does this mean for the average user? Without regular updates to counter emerging threats and exploits, computers running XP are left vulnerable. Worse, this problem will become more severe as time goes on, as the issues that get discovered go unaddressed, and continue to pile up.

This is particularly severe given the way modern hackers operate. Instead of the digital vandalism which was the norm when Windows XP was first released, todayís hackers aim to steal your data, and profit from it. Black markets exist for selling such data which has made hacking profitable, and as a result, the hackers are better trained, equipped, and organized.

For small enterprises, this problem is compounded: not only do businesses have their own data to protect, often times they have client data stored in their systems as well. A security breach can mean lost business, damaged reputation, and lost revenue.

Fortunately, it isnít all bad news. More modern editions of Windows, such as Windows 8, are far less vulnerable to these threats, and have a long support life ahead of them. According to research by Microsoft, Windows 8 is more than 14 times less likely to be infected by viruses than Windows XP. (The 64-bit edition of Windows 8 is more than 56 times less likely to be infected).

So why wait? Upgrade before Windows XP support ends, and avoid the stress of a last minute rush. If you are still using Windows XP, OnSite Computer Services has the expertise to assess your situation and make recommendations, and to make your upgrade transition smooth and hassle-free.
